'The Dusky'
100 dutch graphic designers where asked to make a poster related to 'extremes'
with the restrictions of using only two colours and no black and white.
My poster is a promotion for New Zealand's alpine track in Fiordland's back
country wilderness called 'The Dusky'. This poster was part of the exhibition
'B&W are not colors' in the Ship of Fools Gallery, The Hague. The exhibition was
an initiative of online design magazine 'Fontanel'.

'Urbino's Anthem'
The churchbells of the churches and cathedrals in Urbino ring daily
very regularly. I noticed that the systems these churches use have
a consequent pattern but are very often also inconsequent. The sound-
installation I designed points out this inconsequent consequence.
....In the installation I gave seven sound interpretations for each
church on the original recordings I made of the churchbells. The
amount seven refers to the seven days in a week. The seven tracks
all have a different duration, just as the bells in Urbino have
different durations at different times.
.... In every corner of the square room you find a speaker with equal
distances between each of them. Every speaker plays different sounds
I composed. The tracks will be played shuffled and repeated
continuously. This way I let go of the result which can never be
predicted - just as the churchbell system in Urbino.

'Alphabet, country of origin, colour, height, form'
Systems has been the guiding principle for my research assignment
because I have developed a great fascination for this during my four
years of study. In my research I have made some micro level graphic
systems. In these system sketches I show my daily patterns and use
these as input.
....As a conclusion of my research I have systematized on a macro
level all my belongings on alphabet, country of origin, colour,
height and shape. In my preliminary research I came to 'order' as
root element rather than means.
....For my final exhibition I have exposed the system "height" for the
public tangible in the exhibition space. Behind these twenty-five
square meter of objects there were five television screens that show
a synchronous performance in previously made various installations.
In these performances, arranged according to my design, I perform my
daily actions, such as drumming, playing guitar, brushing my teeth,
reading, eating and drinking.

'De relatie tussen methodiek en esthetiek'
I researched the meaning of the handling of a system and method in
which objectivity and the resulting aesthetics play a major role.
This I did by means of the work of architect Dom Van der Laan,
graphic designer Wim Crouwel and information designers Catalog Tree.
The typography is put into a grid constructed from a related ratio.
Henceforth I used the sizes that resulted out of it to be both
restrictions as well as a handle. These are the principles by which
my design has been developed.

Book proposal 'Nika, Russia Love' in collaboration with Hilmer Thijs
For Dutch photographer Ilse Frech, we made a draft proposal for her
latest project 'Nika, Russia Love'. The photographer has made a photographic
document of young people from Russia, who have been HIV infected. The images
supplied for this project consisted of ninety colour photographs and ten
interviews. We shared our opinion that the selected material does not tell a
complete story. For that reason we have added her raw materials in black and
white photo to her original selection. With this addition we came to a book
of nearly four hundred pages.
.... We have chosen two different papers which clearly distinguish from each
other. The 'art' of the photographer is printed in colour and the added black
and white photographs act as a 'making of' of the story.

MERGERS AND AQUISITORS
By the economic crisis, new alliances will often require change in the
(visual) identity of companies and institutions. This project shows how
a fictional fusion of the PCM newspapers and the government might look
like. [PCM is the largest publisher of national newspapers in the
Netherlands] Financially dependent on
the government the newspapers of
PCM get, inspired by the current logo of the national government, a
rightwing, authoritarian state-newspaper identity.

Typografie Werkplaats
This is a poster based on a quote of graphic designer Robert L. Peters:
Design Creates Culture. Culture shapes Values. Values determining the
Future'. The 'shaping' is depicted by carving out the words 'Design,
Culture, Values' in western script out of an Arabic news magazine.

Proposal studyguide ArtEZ Art and Design | in collaboration with Babette Zijlstra
This studyguide should include an agenda and textual information about
the three academies. The concept of this study was based on the phenomenon
"time" because the informative texts were subordinate to the agenda. Time
is depicted in this day-agenda through a documentation in three different
locations in the academy building. The captured images which have been
recorded within 24 hours, are displayed simultaneously with the expiration
of all days in the year.

Last FM CMS | in collaboration with David de Zwart
Last FM is an popular online music community website. Every user's music
listening data are transferred to last.fm's database. Each profile has
their own musical neighbors. What is interesting about this is that these
neighbours have the most similar music listening behaviors as you have,
based on the music data. We compared the data from two Last FM users for
over a year. Every page shows the comparison from the listening behavior
from that week and the echo of the week before.

Publication 'Design & Dialogues in web 2.0'
Together with Tim Baartmans, Marie Wocher and Dianne Rijnbende, we made
a two-volume publication wherein all research findings and results of
the minor 'Design Critique' have been documented. The 'Design' section
gives an overview of all projects made by the students and focuses on
the design choices. The "Dialogues" section consists of reports of
groupprojects and the resulting questions. These questions we presented
to designers and theorists: Kim de Groot, Mireille Hildebrandt, Ronald
Leenes & Design Negation [Merijn Oudenampsen, Daniel van der Velden,
Ghalia Elsrakbi]

Cavern - Liquid Liquid
'Cavern' by Liquid Liquid is a early 80's song which is remixed and
sampled a lot throughout the years. The core of the sampling is the
bassline and the drums. I designed eight different partitures which
represents the resampling of this song. Like the ongoing bassline I
places these partitures randomly on a A0 poster and then cut them
out into a A4 booklet. These partitures can be read by musicians and
they can actually create there own sound to it.

JFK assassination
There are many conspiracy theories regarding the assassination
of John Fitzgerald Kennedy on november 22nd, 1963 in Dallas.
This Infographic shows both the pro and contra theories
of the assassination.

Dogma 95
Dogme 95 film is a Danish filmmaking movement which created the
dogme 95 'manifesto'. These were rules to create filmmaking based
on the traditional values of story, acting and theme, and excluding
the use of elaborate special effects or technology. Restricting my
selves in the pursuit of purity, I have made movie posters for the
film 'Italien for beginners'. In the designingproces I withheld
myself by not using the computer. I limited myself to only use
mimeograph print technique, copymachine and photography.

Type specimen 'Nobel'
Characteristic for the font 'Nobel', designed by dutch typographer
Sjoerd de Roos, are the contrasting hard curves towards the straight
angular. I pointed out this difference by lowering all round letters
to an x-height. The result shows a dynamic character of a dancing text
line which refers to concrete poetry.

Book to Newspaper
For this project I have made a translation from book to newspaper. The
book that I translated was a dictionary of financial and business terms.
For the design I set up some systematic rules in order that many design
choices will be determined by the text itself.

Intervention public space
Responding to the unannounced removal of the free pastecolumn that stood
on the Willemssquare in Arnhem, I made an intervention in the public space.
The text 'DIT WAS EEN VRIJE PLAKZUIL' [which means 'this was a free
pastecolumn'] draw's people's attention to the exchange from a free
pastcolumn to a commercial pastecolumn.
